Gold Sheen Obsidian and Its Solar Shimmer

Black stone pierced by a golden, shimmering veil—gold sheen obsidian captivates with its almost solar glow. Here's what crystal healing tradition associates with it, how to recognize it, and how I craft it into handmade pieces in my studio.

What is gold sheen obsidian?

Gold sheen obsidian is a variety of black obsidian, the natural volcanic glass born from the rapid cooling of lava rich in silica. Its hallmark: when you turn it in the light, a golden, chatoyant veil emerges, like an inner glow floating beneath the black surface.

This shimmer is far more than a simple inclusion: it moves with your viewing angle, giving each stone an almost living presence. This is what's called the sheen effect, or chatoyancy.

Gold sheen obsidian is my favorite variety for pieces worn close to the face. Its glow catches light with every movement—it's like the jewelry is breathing.

Where the golden shimmer comes from

Contrary to what some claim, the gold in gold sheen obsidian is not true gold metal. It comes from microscopic gas bubbles and fine inclusions, aligned in parallel layers during the lava's cooling.

When light passes through the stone, it refracts across these fine layers, producing the chatoyant veil—more or less intense depending on your viewing angle. The finer and more regular the layers, the brighter the gold. For more on how this stone forms, see my article on how obsidian is formed.

Crystal healing properties of gold sheen obsidian

In crystal healing tradition, gold sheen obsidian is believed to be both protective and solar in energy. It shares the core qualities of black obsidian—protection, grounding, truth—but with an energy described as more gentle and confident, thanks to its golden sheen.

It is traditionally associated with these qualities:

  • confidence and self-worth: often seen as a stone that helps you stand tall, dare, and claim your space;
  • releasing old fears: it is said to accompany times of transformation and inner reckoning;
  • abundance and clarity: through its golden gleam, it is traditionally linked to prosperity and personal radiance;
  • energetic protection: like all obsidians, it is viewed as a gentle shield against heavy energies;
  • gentle grounding: a protection less "stark" than pure black obsidian, more enveloping.

Chakra and energy

Gold sheen obsidian is traditionally linked to two chakras:

  • the root chakra (Muladhara), at the base of the body—tied to safety, stability, and grounding;
  • the solar plexus chakra (Manipura), through its golden gleam—tied to self-worth, willpower, and personal power.

This dual association explains why it's often recommended during times when you need both to feel grounded (root) and find your momentum (solar plexus). This makes it a highly valued stone for personal growth.

Associated zodiac signs

In crystal healing, gold sheen obsidian is traditionally linked to several zodiac signs, whose energies are believed to resonate with the stone:

  • Sagittarius: for its drive, quest for meaning, and need for freedom;
  • Capricorn: for its determination, grounding, and sense of responsibility;
  • Scorpio: for its connection to introspection and inner transformation.

That said, choosing a stone should never be limited to your zodiac sign alone: crystal healing invites you above all to choose one toward which you feel naturally drawn.

How to wear gold sheen obsidian

Gold sheen obsidian is worn daily, like any obsidian. What changes is its relationship with light: to fully enjoy its golden veil, choose it visible, in places where movement reveals its glow.

  • as a bracelet: my favorite format for this stone, your wrist moves constantly and lets the gleam dance;
  • as a necklace or pendant: near the solar plexus, in resonance with its primary chakra;
  • as a ring: perfect to keep it in view, a gentle golden reminder.

Traditionally, wear the stone on your left wrist to receive its energy, on the right to send it outward. Choose what resonates with you.

✦ A word from Camille

I often slip a gold sheen obsidian bracelet into orders for birthdays: it's the stone I find most generous to gift. Its gleam always brings a smile when someone opens their package.

Care and cleansing

Like all obsidians, gold sheen obsidian is volcanic glass to handle gently. For physical care—dust and shine—a soft cloth is enough; avoid salt, impacts, and harsh products. I cover all this in my guide on how to clean obsidian.

For energetic cleansing (in the crystal healing sense), smoke and moonlight are gentle methods that suit it well; find the details in my article on cleansing and charging your obsidian.

Keep in mind — the properties described here come from crystal healing tradition, founded on beliefs and traditions. They do not constitute medical claims, do not treat any disease, and are never a substitute for professional medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What makes gold sheen obsidian different from black obsidian?
It's the same stone family, but gold sheen obsidian shows a golden, chatoyant veil caused by microscopic gas bubbles aligned in the volcanic glass. Energetically, it's described as black obsidian with a gentler, more solar energy.
Does gold sheen obsidian actually contain gold?
No. Its golden gleam comes not from true gold but from microscopic bubbles and fine inclusions aligned in the glass. It's an optical effect called chatoyancy, not a metal deposit.
How do I recognize true gold sheen obsidian?
The golden veil should move when you rotate the stone in light, not stay fixed. A stone whose gold stays constant from all angles may be tinted glass. True gold sheen obsidian also shows tiny bubbles visible under magnification.
Is gold sheen obsidian for everyone?
Its reputation is of being gentler than pure black obsidian, so it's more accessible for those new to obsidians. As with any stone, trust your intuition first.
What stones pair well with gold sheen obsidian?
In crystal healing, it pairs nicely with citrine or tiger's eye to strengthen its solar confidence side; with black tourmaline or hematite to enhance protection; with rose quartz to soften its intensity.
