Rainbow obsidian owes its shimmer to a fascinating optical phenomenon: as volcanic lava cools, tiny inclusions of magnetite freeze in fine layers within the glass. When light strikes these layers, it is refracted and returns blue, silver, or iridescent shimmer — a bit like on the surface of a soap bubble.
