Description

The Yin & Yang obsidian necklace, balance made visible in stone, the most recognized Taoist symbol in the world, carved from black obsidian paired with a natural white stone. Two halves that answer each other, neither complete on its own. Handcrafted from natural stones, this is the one you wear as a reminder that nothing is ever all black or all white.

The Yin and Yang symbol, or taijitu, comes from Chinese Taoist thought. It represents two opposing yet complementary forces, shadow and light, rest and action, feminine and masculine, that never cancel each other out, but balance in a constant circular motion. The small light dot in the dark half, and the dark dot in the light half, are a reminder that neither force ever exists in a pure state.

Carved in stone rather than painted, this symbol takes on a rare materiality. Black obsidian forms the yin half, dark, receptive, turned inward, while a natural white stone forms the yang half, light, active, turned outward. The two stones are joined to form a single pendant, just like the two forces they represent.

In crystal healing, black obsidian keeps its properties of protection and grounding. Paired with its white counterpart, it’s traditionally read as a call to balance rather than excess in either direction, not too much action, not too much withdrawal. A piece many like to wear during periods when one of the two forces starts taking up too much space.

Camille, founder of Bijoux Obsidienne, crafting a Yin and Yang obsidian necklace in her workshop in France

Handcrafted by Camille

Every necklace is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. Joining the two stones is the trickiest part: the seam between black and white has to be clean, with no misalignment, so the symbol’s S-curve stays fluid. It’s a precision job unlike my single-stone pieces.

I love this pendant for what it refuses to decide, it never says one side is right against the other. That feels like the right idea for a piece of jewelry: a reminder that we always carry both forces within us. Discover the story of the workshop, or my whole obsidian necklace collection.

“Black without white means nothing, and the reverse is true too. That’s what I love about this pendant: it can’t exist halfway.”, Camille

Care: a soft cloth is all it takes; avoid salt, knocks and prolonged water, and take it off before showering or working out. All my care tips are in the cleaning guide.

Here are the correspondences linked to obsidian and the Yin and Yang symbol — they come from traditions and beliefs, and should be taken as such.

The Taijitu

The Taoist symbol — two halves in circular motion, each carrying a trace of the other.

A reminder that no force ever exists in a pure state.

Yin — Obsidian

The receptive force — rest, introspection, the inward.

Black obsidian, deep and grounding, is its natural representation.

Yang — White Stone

The active force — movement, action, the outward.

The white stone balances the density of the obsidian.

Balance

Wearing this symbol is traditionally a reminder not to lean too far either way — in work as in rest, in action as in withdrawal.

A reminder: these correspondences belong to crystal healing and Taoist philosophy, approaches based on traditions and beliefs. They are not medical claims and never replace the advice of a healthcare professional.

Caring for your obsidian

To keep your piece looking its best, a soft cloth is usually all you need. Avoid salt, harsh products and knocks, and take it off before showering, swimming or working out.

In crystal practice, many people also like to cleanse and recharge their stone from time to time, with smoke, under moonlight, or on a cluster of quartz.

Handmade jewelry, made in France
