Description
The obsidian band ring, a continuous black ring with no stone to show and no direction to slide it on, the plainest shape a ring can take. A circle, nothing else. Handmade with an obsidian strip inlaid into the metal, it’s the one you put on once and never readjust.
The band is the original shape of the ring: a rounded profile, even all the way around, with no setting or protruding stone. It’s also the shape of the wedding band, the one worn for decades without ever being removed, precisely because it snags on nothing and gets in the way of nothing. Where a stone ring has a front that constantly needs straightening, a band has neither a top nor a bottom.
An honest note on how it’s made: I don’t offer a band carved from a solid block of obsidian, and that’s a deliberate choice. This stone is a brittle volcanic glass; a solid stone band, however thin, doesn’t hold up long to daily wear, a single drop onto a hard floor is enough. Here, the obsidian is inlaid as a continuous strip into a metal band that acts as its frame. You get the same black ring, with a structure built to last.
The inlay demands precise work: the metal is grooved all the way around, and the stone strip is fitted into it, then polished flush until the surface is perfectly continuous under the finger. Nothing protrudes, nothing can chip at the edge.
In crystal healing, black obsidian is associated with the root chakra and protection. As a band, it surrounds the whole finger rather than occupying a single point, a difference tradition reads as continuous protection rather than concentrated protection. Every ring is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. The inlay is the longest process in my collection: the groove has to be cut evenly all the way around, the stone strip fitted with no play, then polished flush until the join can no longer be felt under the finger. A single irregularity and the ring catches.
I’m sometimes asked for a band carved from solid obsidian. I don’t make that, and I’d rather say so plainly: it would break. I’d rather offer a ring you keep for twenty years than one that looks “purer” and ends up in two pieces. Discover the story of the workshop, or my whole collection of obsidian rings.
“A solid stone band looks beautiful in a photo. On a finger, six months later, it’s a different story.”, Camille
Care: a soft cloth is all it takes; avoid salt, knocks and prolonged water, and remove the ring for sports and DIY. Since the surface is polished flush, it cleans more easily than a ring with a protruding stone. All my tips are in the cleaning guide.
