Rainbow obsidian owes its name to a precise optical phenomenon: tiny gas inclusions, trapped in the stone as it cooled, create a light interference that produces colored reflections, pink, green, gold, sometimes blue, when the stone is finely cut and angled just right. It isn’t an applied tint; it’s a natural optical effect, unique to each stone.
Careful not to confuse it with celestial eye obsidian, which shows pinpoint blue-silver reflections in a star pattern, rainbow obsidian stands apart with its multi-color spectrum and a more diffuse, almost oily effect across the surface of the stone. Both varieties are rare and require precise cutting to reveal their effect.
In a pendant, a single stone carries the whole effect, unlike a strand of beads, where the sheen is spread across twenty different stones. It’s the format that gives the best rendering of this variety: a stone wide enough for the eye to follow the shift of colors as it moves.

Every pendant is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. Rainbow obsidian is one of the most delicate stones to work with: the colored effect only appears from a precise cutting angle, and I have to orient each stone so the sheen stays visible once mounted as a pendant, at eye level, not just on the workbench.
It’s a stone that always surprises my customers the first time they see it under light, the shift from solid black to hidden colors never fails to land.
