Description
The black obsidian men’s pendant, a cylinder of black stone engraved with a text that generations of monks have copied by hand, the Heart Sutra, one of the shortest and most profound texts of Mahayana Buddhism, here inscribed in obsidian rather than on paper. No figure, no ornament: a column of characters, dense and austere. Handmade with natural stones, it’s the one you wear the way you’d carry a text you don’t need to reread to remember.
The Heart Sutra (般若波羅蜜多心經) is one of the founding texts of Mahayana Buddhism, a few hundred characters that, in their tradition, sum up the essence of transcendent wisdom. Its brevity has made it one of the most copied, recited and engraved texts in all of Buddhist history: on paper, on stelae, and for a long time on objects kept close to the body.
Engraving this text into obsidian belongs to that ancient tradition of worn writing, an object you don’t necessarily reread day to day, but whose presence is enough to recall what it holds. The cylindrical shape leaves the whole surface available for the calligraphy, column after column, like a scroll of text set into stone.
Black obsidian, for its part, keeps its traditional role: a stone of protection and grounding, said in crystal healing to block outside tension. Paired with a text of wisdom, it becomes a pendant with a double function, a shield that also carries a teaching.

Every pendant is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. Engraving such a dense text demands a precision I find on no other piece: every character has to stay legible on a curved surface, without the stone cracking under the tool. It isn’t a motif I can improvise, it’s a text, and a text doesn’t forgive misreadings.

Care: a soft cloth is all it takes; avoid salt, knocks and prolonged water, and take it off before showering or exercising, the engraving is more sensitive to wear than a smooth surface. All my tips are in the cleaning guide.
