Description
The solid silver obsidian ring, a wide band where the metal stands as a rampart around the stone, six millimetres of 925 silver that absorb impact in the obsidian’s place. It’s the exact opposite of my thin ring, and yet the same intention: making a stone that breaks easily last. Handmade with natural stones, it’s the one you wear when you want it to be seen.
One useful clarification first: “solid silver” and “chunky ring” don’t mean the same thing. Solid silver refers to the material, 925 silver throughout, as opposed to plating which has only a thin surface layer. A chunky ring, on the other hand, refers to volume: a wide, thick band. This ring is both at once, and that’s what sets it apart from my other silver models.
This volume isn’t just a matter of style. Obsidian is a volcanic glass, hard but brittle, and the ring is the piece of jewelry that takes the most everyday impact. On this model, the stone is set into a thick mounting that projects slightly beyond its surface: it’s the silver edges that make contact first, never the stone. The metal plays the role of armor. It’s the opposite strategy from my thin ring, where the stone is small and set low to avoid catching on anything, but it answers exactly the same problem.
Solid 925 silver contains 92.5 % pure silver, the best compromise between shine and durability. On a piece of this volume, that adds up to a meaningful amount of metal, hence a noticeable weight on the hand, around 14 grams, felt constantly without ever being forgotten.
In crystal healing, black obsidian is associated with the root chakra and protection. Worn as a wide ring, it becomes an object hard to ignore: present with every gesture, in the field of view, with the weight to remind you of it. Handcrafted by Camille
Every ring is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. On this model, everything comes down to the height of the setting: the silver border has to rise enough above the stone to protect it from impact, without enclosing it so far that it’s no longer visible. A tenth of a millimetre changes the whole balance.
I designed this ring and my thin ring around the same time, looking for two answers to the same problem: how to make a stone that breaks last. The thin one recesses the stone so it catches on nothing; this one surrounds it with metal so it never touches anything. Two opposite logics, one single obsession. See also my thin silver and obsidian ring, or the story of the workshop.
“On this ring, it’s never the stone that gets knocked, it’s the silver. That’s the whole point of putting that much metal into it.”, Camille
Care: a soft cloth is all it takes for the stone. For 925 silver, avoid prolonged contact with water, perfume and cosmetics, and polish it occasionally to preserve its shine. Despite its protective mounting, remove the ring for sports and DIY. All my tips are in the cleaning guide.
