Description
The black obsidian signet ring, the ring that once served to make its mark, pressed into wax, it stood as a signature. Here, the plate isn’t engraved with a crest but cut from flat-polished obsidian: a small black mirror set on the finger. Handmade with natural stones, it’s the one you wear without needing to explain why.
The signet ring is one of the few rings to have had a function before becoming an ornament. Its flat plate, carved in relief with a crest or initials, was used to seal wax on letters, the ring was the legal identity of whoever wore it. This history left it with its characteristic silhouette: a wide, flat plate, shoulders widening as they rise toward it.
Replacing the engraved metal with flat-polished obsidian isn’t a trivial swap. This stone is a volcanic glass, and polished flat, it does exactly what Mesoamerican divination mirrors did: it reflects. The famous “smoking mirrors” of Aztec civilisations were nothing more than discs of polished obsidian, a signet plate is today the closest wearable form of that. Where a classic signet displays a symbol, this one reflects the image of whoever looks at it.
The format also has a practical advantage on a stone as brittle as obsidian: the plate is flat and flush, surrounded by a slightly raised metal border. Nothing projects, nothing catches, and impact is absorbed by the metal before it reaches the stone.
In crystal healing, black obsidian is associated with the root chakra and protection. To go further into the tradition of the obsidian mirror, read my article on the black obsidian magic mirror, or discover my complete guide to obsidian. To choose your size, check the size guide.

Handcrafted by Camille
Every signet ring is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. The flat plate is the most demanding finish I make: on a mirror-polished surface, the slightest micro-scratch or dull patch shows immediately, where a domed cut forgives far more. I spend more time on this polish than on any of my other pieces.
I love that this format reverses the usual logic of the signet ring. It typically carries a crest, an initial, something that declares who you are. Here, the stone says nothing: it reflects. It’s another way of wearing a mark. Discover the story of the workshop, or my whole collection of obsidian rings.
“An engraved signet ring tells you who you are. This one says nothing at all, it shows you your own face. I find that more honest.”, Camille
Care: a soft cloth is all it takes, and it’s especially useful here, a mirror-polished plate shows fingerprints more visibly. Avoid salt, knocks and prolonged water, and remove the ring for sports and DIY. All my tips are in the cleaning guide.
