Description

A round gold sheen obsidian cabochon, ringed by a crown of blackened silver beads. It is the only round cabochon among the fifteen settings in the series, all the others being oval, and that changes more than you would think.

An oval has a direction: it has to stay aligned with the axis of the finger, and a ring that turns a little on a slim finger sets it crooked. You notice it all day long and put it back without thinking. A round cabochon has no orientation: the ring can turn as much as it likes, the stone is always straight. It is a detail of daily use, and it is the best reason to choose this model over another.

The crown of beads plays the part the beaded border plays elsewhere, only more strongly: the beads are larger and form a true ring around the cabochon, which visibly widens the head of the ring. On a round cabochon that ring doubles the shape and makes it more present than its actual size. The other rings are here.

The reservation is the width of the head. With its crown, this ring takes up nearly 15 mm / 5/8 in on the finger, and it catches: under a glove, in a pocket, against a knitted fabric. It is not a ring to wear for gardening or for working with your hands. The fine beaded band models in the series are far more discreet if everyday use is what matters. The size guide saves a return.

Crystal lore ties obsidian to grounding, and gold sheen in particular to self-confidence. None of that is proven, and no piece of jewellery heals anything. I have gathered separately what tradition attributes to obsidian, in the conditional from start to finish.

Camille in her workshop, setting an obsidian cabochon into a ring

Why a round is easier to live with than an oval

Setting a round cabochon is easier than an oval, and that has to be said even if it works against the price. On an oval, the rim has to be folded harder at the two ends than along the sides, failing which the stone moves in its seat; so the pressure has to be measured out as you turn, which takes learning. On a round, the pressure is the same everywhere and you can turn steadily. The round is not less well set, it is simply simpler to set correctly.

This setting exists because many people were sending oval rings back saying they turned. They did not turn more than the others: it is the oval that makes the rotation visible. A round settles the complaint without changing anything else. The other rings are here.

Oval rings do not turn more than round ones. It is the oval that makes the rotation visible.

Obsidian does not mind water, but it shatters on impact and scratches against a hard metal. Take the ring off before DIY and sport. Do not polish the blackened hollows of the crown: the black comes away in a few passes. Cleaning an obsidian piece covers the rest.

What follows belongs to the traditions and beliefs attached to this stone. I gather it here because I am often asked, and I keep it apart from the rest of the page for one simple reason: none of it is proven, and no piece of jewellery heals anything.

Root Chakra (Muladhara)

Traditional correspondences tie obsidian to the first chakra, the one of grounding and of contact with the floor.

Worn on the hand, the stone stays far from that point, and tradition does not make it a condition.

The gold sheen

It is linked to self-confidence, by analogy with the light that seems to come out of the stone.

An image, not a property.

The circle

The full round shape is a solar motif in many cultures, with no shared meaning.

A shared form, not a message.

The mirror

Polished, obsidian served as a mirror in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.

That is an archaeological fact, not a promise.

Traditions and beliefs, nothing more. None of these associations is medical advice, and no piece of jewellery replaces treatment or examination. If you are under treatment, pregnant or in a course of care, speak to your doctor rather than to your jeweller.

Caring for your obsidian

To keep your piece looking its best, a soft cloth is usually all you need. Avoid salt, harsh products and knocks, and take it off before showering, swimming or exercising.

In crystal healing, many people also like to cleanse and charge their stone from time to time, with smoke, under moonlight, or on a quartz cluster.
