Black Tourmaline vs Obsidian: How to Tell Them Apart
One glance is usually all it takes, and it costs nothing: black tourmaline carries parallel striations running lengthwise, and obsidian never does. Here's what actually separates these two black stones, their gemological constants, five checks you can do at home including a small static-electricity trick, and what crystal healing tradition attributes to each.

A glass and a crystal

Black tourmaline, which mineralogists call schorl, is the opposite in every sense: a genuinely crystalline mineral, trigonal in structure, belonging to the famously complex borosilicate family. It owes its black color to a high iron content and grows in elongated prisms, found in pegmatites and metamorphic rock across Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, and Pakistan.
That difference is the one thing worth remembering: a crystal grows along defined axes, and that growth leaves traces. On tourmaline, those traces are parallel grooves running the full length of the prism, deep, regular, and impossible to mistake for anything else. A glass has no growth axis at all: obsidian is smooth, everywhere, always.

In short, three lines do most of the work. The striations are visible to the naked eye. Density (≈2.45 vs ≈3.15) is something you feel the moment you hold the piece. And electricity is a property obsidian simply doesn't have, which comes in handy below.
Five checks you can do at home
Ranked from most to least reliable, and all of them non-destructive except the last one, which I'd skip.
Look for striations
The decisive test, free and instant. Tilt the stone toward a window: if parallel grooves appear running in one direction, it's tourmaline. They stay visible even on tumbled stones or beads, where they show up as fine, regular dark lines. Obsidian has nothing to show, just a smooth surface.
Weigh it in your hand
A bracelet of 22 beads at 8mm weighs about 14.5g in obsidian versus 18.5g in tourmaline, nearly 30% more. It's less dramatic than with some very dense stones, but perfectly noticeable with a bracelet in each hand, and unmistakable on a kitchen scale.
The static electricity test
The most fun, and the least well-known. Tourmaline is pyroelectric: when warmed, it builds an electric charge and attracts dust. Dutch traders in the 18th century called it aschentrekker, "ash puller," because it pulled ash from meerschaum pipes. Rub the stone briskly in a wool cloth, then bring it near tiny paper confetti: tourmaline pulls them in, obsidian doesn't. Never heat it over a flame, warming it in your hand or in sunlight is enough, and thermal shock damages both stones.
Look at the fracture and shine
On a raw chip, obsidian shows a conchoidal fracture, curved, shell-shaped surfaces with sharp edges, and a deep, almost liquid vitreous shine. Tourmaline breaks unevenly and looks flatter, more "mineral."
Scratch it, best avoided
A steel point (hardness ≈5.5) scratches obsidian but not tourmaline (7 to 7.5). The test works, and it permanently damages the piece. The four tests above are more than enough; if you insist, work on a hidden spot only.

Keep in mind, none of these home checks replace a real gemological exam. For a valuable piece, or a dispute with a seller, only an independent lab can settle it: tourmaline's birefringence, absent in obsidian, is measured in minutes with a refractometer.
What crystal healing tradition attributes to each

Both are sold as "protection stones," and that's exactly where the confusion starts. In tradition, though, they're described as playing different roles.
Black tourmaline
Described as a shield turned outward. Tradition credits it with a defensive role: deflecting, filtering, holding a line. It's the stone often recommended for heavy environments.
Black obsidian
Described as a mirror turned inward. Tradition credits it with clarity more than defense: it reflects, surfaces, brings things forward. It protects by illuminating rather than by blocking.

Other black stones people confuse with obsidian
Tourmaline isn't the only one that gets mixed up with obsidian. Three other black materials circulate under loose labels:
- Black spinel, a dense (≈3.60) and hard (7.5 to 8) cubic mineral. Almost always cut into bright, sparkling facets, which gives it away instantly, neither obsidian nor tourmaline is ever cut that way;
- Black onyx, a chalcedony, hardness 6.5 to 7, whose uniform commercial black is almost always achieved through dyeing. Its look is flat and perfectly even, without obsidian's glassy quality or tourmaline's striations;
- Manufactured black glass, the one real problem on this list. Too perfect, no inclusions, often translucent at the edges, sometimes with a visible mold seam. It warms up fast in your hand. This is what's behind those impossible-colored "blue obsidians" online.
Sorting them out is quick: striated means tourmaline. Faceted and sparkly means spinel. Matte and perfectly uniform means dyed onyx. Too perfect and too light means glass. Which one should you choose?

On pure technical merit, I'll say it plainly: tourmaline is the tougher stone. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale versus obsidian's 5 to 5.5, it holds up far better against everyday wear. For a ring worn daily, that's a real argument.
What obsidian has going for it is a different kind of appeal. Its black isn't flat but deep, almost liquid depending on the light, the shine of true glass, something tourmaline's more mineral look doesn't produce. It also takes a polish that few stones can match, which is exactly why people carved mirrors from it for centuries. And its material tells a story: cooled lava, a geological accident.
I don't work with tourmaline, and it's not out of principle, obsidian is simply enough for me. That black that shifts with the light, flat one moment and almost liquid the next, I've never gotten tired of it. Tourmaline is a beautiful stone. It's just not mine.

The hardness gap has an immediate consequence: don't store these two stones together. Tourmaline, at 7 to 7.5, will scratch obsidian without any effort. Give each piece its own pouch or compartment.
