Fire Obsidian, the Rarest Obsidian of All

Flashes of flame-red, gold, and emerald green that seem to burn beneath the surface of black glass: fire obsidian is the most coveted variety in the whole family, and by far the hardest to come by. Here's the physics behind its fire, why it comes almost exclusively from one corner of Oregon, and what to know before you buy one.

What is fire obsidian?

Fire obsidian is a variety of black obsidian displaying an intensity of iridescence unmatched anywhere else in volcanic glass. Flame red, gold, emerald green, sometimes deep blue: the colors are saturated, metallic, and seem to come from inside the stone itself.

Where other obsidians show a veil or a sheen, this one gives the impression that a fire is smoldering beneath the surface. The comparison that comes up most often is black opal, or the wing of a morpho butterfly.

It's also the most under-the-radar variety of all. You'll almost never come across it in mainstream jewelry: it mostly circulates among collectors and lapidaries, cut one cabochon at a time. See where it sits among the others in my guide to obsidian varieties.

I don't work with it in my studio, and I'd rather say so plainly. Good pieces are rare, expensive, and cutting them takes a lapidary's skill I don't have. But I held one once, at a mineral show. You understand immediately why it fascinates people.

The physics behind the fire

The mechanism is the same as in rainbow obsidian, just pushed to an extreme.

As the lava cooled, magnetite nanoparticles, an iron oxide, arranged themselves into layers inside the glass. When light hits these layers, it reflects off both the top and the bottom: the two waves recombine, some wavelengths cancel out, others amplify. This is called thin-film interference, the exact same phenomenon that colors a soap bubble or a film of oil on water.

What sets fire obsidian apart is the fineness and regularity of these layers. The thinner and more even the layer, the more saturated the colors, and the more sharply they shift as you tilt the stone. In rainbow obsidian, the layers are thicker and less regular, giving broad, soft bands. In fire obsidian, you get patches of pure color, like molten metal.

Fire or rainbow: how to tell them apart

Many sellers use the two names interchangeably. That's not correct, and the price gap between them is considerable.

Fire obsidian

Saturated, metallic colors, in patches or swirls. Red, gold, bright green. The effect often covers a limited area, but a dazzling one.

Rainbow obsidian

Softer, broader iridescence, in concentric bands. Green, purple, deep blue. The effect runs across the whole stone but stays understated.

Good rule of thumb, if you're offered a beaded bracelet labeled "fire obsidian" at an everyday price, it's almost certainly rainbow obsidian. Real fire obsidian is sold as one-of-a-kind, hand-cut pieces, rarely as strung beads.

An almost unique source in the world

This is one of the most remarkable facts about this variety: it comes almost exclusively from Oregon, in the United States, mainly from the Glass Buttes area, a cluster of volcanic domes in the center of the state.

This area has long been known for the diversity of its obsidian, black, mahogany, rainbow, snowflake. But the very specific conditions that produce fire, those extremely fine magnetite layers, only occur in certain flows, and only in scattered pockets.

Other Oregon localities yield it occasionally, and a handful of reports exist elsewhere in the world. Nothing comes close, in quantity or in quality, to what this corner of Oregon produces. That geographic concentration explains much of the stone's rarity, and why the finest pieces often stay in the United States.

Why it's so rare and so expensive

The limited deposit only explains part of the price. The rest comes down to a problem few people know about: fire obsidian is extremely difficult to cut.

The magnetite layer that produces the fire sits buried inside the glass, at a depth that varies and can't be predicted. To reveal the colors, the lapidary has to grind the stone until reaching that exact layer, and stop right there.

  • Not enough grinding, the fire stays buried, the stone looks plain black;
  • Too much grinding, the layer gets ground through and destroyed. The fire is gone for good;
  • Wrong angle, since the layer isn't flat, a flat surface only reveals a fraction of it. The cutter has to follow its curve.

An experienced lapidary works largely blind, stopping constantly to check the stone under light. The loss rate is considerable: a significant share of rough material will never yield a fine piece. And an error of a few tenths of a millimeter can undo hours of work.

That idea of having to reach an exact layer, I find it dizzying. The cutter doesn't know what's underneath. They move forward a hair's width, check, and try again. And at some point, the color appears, or it doesn't.

The meaning attributed to fire obsidian

A bit of honesty is needed here.

Worth knowing, fire obsidian was only identified and named as a distinct variety recently, as Oregon lapidaries learned how to reveal its effect. It has no ancient tradition in crystal healing. The "ancestral properties" sometimes claimed for it on certain sites were invented in the last few decades, by analogy with its color. That doesn't make them meaningless, but it's worth knowing where they come from.

That said, the correspondences attributed to it today follow logically from its appearance:

  • passion and vital energy, by direct analogy with fire;
  • courage and the will to act, in line with red stones;
  • transformation, a theme common to all obsidians;
  • creativity, often cited for its multiple colors.

Buying fire obsidian without getting burned

This is the variety most prone to misrepresentation, precisely because it's expensive and little understood. Three pitfalls come up again and again.

1. Rainbow obsidian sold as fire

The most common issue, and rarely dishonest: many sellers genuinely confuse the two. Trust the intensity. Fire gives saturated, almost metallic colors, with red and gold in the mix. Rainbow stays in satiny greens and purples.

2. Iridescent glass

Manufactured glass imitations circulate. The same rule of thumb applies as for all obsidian: the base must be black and opaque, never translucent or colored throughout. And the stone should feel cool to the touch.

3. The "aura" coating

Ordinary black obsidian coated with a metallic film through vacuum treatment. The film is shiny but sits on the surface: the iridescence doesn't shift as you turn the stone, and the pattern looks uniform. Real fire moves and changes as you tilt it.

Three questions to ask a seller: where does the stone come from (a solid answer mentions Oregon), is it a one-of-a-kind, hand-cut piece, and can you see a video of the stone in motion. That last one is decisive, a still photo proves nothing.

Care and cleansing

A piece of fire obsidian calls for more care than an ordinary obsidian, for a purely physical reason: its effect depends on a layer sitting just beneath the surface. Wear down the polish, and the fire fades.

  • Cleaning, a soft, dry cloth only. No products, no abrasive microfiber;
  • Cleansing, smudging is preferable. Avoid soaking, and never use salt, which micro-scratches the surface;
  • Recharging, moonlight, without prolonged sun exposure;
  • Storage, in its own pouch, never touching other stones;
  • Wearing it, avoid rings and bracelets, too exposed to knocks. As a pendant, the stone stays better protected.
