Description
The thin silver obsidian ring, a two-millimetre solid silver band carrying a small black stone, made to stack with other rings rather than rule alone. And on a stone as brittle as obsidian, the thin format isn’t just a matter of style: it’s also the most durable. Handmade with natural stones, it’s the one you wear every day without thinking about it.
Let’s start with what no one tells you: obsidian is a volcanic glass, hard but brittle, around 5 on the Mohs scale. And of all jewellery, the ring is the piece that takes the most knocks, doors, keyboards, handles, steering wheels. This is exactly where the thin format becomes interesting: a small, low-set stone presents less exposed surface, projects less from the band, and therefore catches far less than the large domed stone of a statement ring. Choosing thin, here, means choosing durable.
The second appeal of this format is aesthetic: this ring is designed for stacking. A 2 mm band doesn’t try to take over the whole finger, it pairs, combines, is worn in numbers, with other thin bands, silver or not. It’s a different jewellery vocabulary from the single statement piece: here you compose rather than declare.
Solid 925 silver, 92.5 % pure silver, is the metal best suited to this exercise: strong enough to hold up at a thin gauge, with a cool tone that leaves all the room to the stone’s deep black. Unlike plating, it doesn’t wear thin at the surface over time.
In crystal healing, black obsidian is associated with the root chakra and protection. Worn on the hand rather than the wrist or neck, it accompanies every gesture, permanently visible to the wearer. Handcrafted by Camille
Every ring is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. On a 2 mm band, there’s no room for error: the setting has to hold the stone firmly while staying discreet enough not to weigh down the line. It’s the most meticulous setting in my whole ring collection.
I created this model because I was often asked for an obsidian ring “for every day.” But a large stone on a daily ring ends up knocking against things, and obsidian doesn’t forgive repeated impacts. The honest answer was to go smaller and lower. See also my other obsidian rings, or the story of the workshop.
“A smaller stone isn’t a lesser stone. On a ring you never take off, it’s simply the choice that lasts.”, Camille
Care: a soft cloth is all it takes for the stone. For 925 silver, avoid prolonged contact with water, perfume and cosmetics, and polish it occasionally. Remove the ring for sports, DIY and housework, that’s when knocks happen. All my tips are in the cleaning guide.
