Description
The obsidian cabochon ring, a domed stone with not a single facet, and on a ring, it’s more than a matter of taste. A facet has edges and points; a dome has nothing to chip. That’s why lapidaries have always reserved this cut for the most delicate stones. Handmade with natural stones, it’s the one where the stone takes up all the space.
A cabochon follows a simple rule: no facets. Where a faceted cut multiplies small planes to fragment light, the cabochon keeps a domed, continuous surface, polished in a single sweep from edge to peak. It’s the oldest cut in lapidary work, used long before facets could be cut with precision.
On obsidian, this choice is also technical. This stone is a volcanic glass, hard but brittle, and a ring takes more knocks than any other piece of jewellery. The weak points of a cut stone are always the same: edges, points, the junctions between facets, that’s where chips start. A dome has none of these. The shape itself is its protection, even before the setting.
Here, unlike my silver rings where the metal plays a central role, the mounting recedes: a thin closed bezel holds the stone by its edge without covering any of its surface, on a 3 mm band that doesn’t try to compete with the cabochon. The result is a ring where you see, almost, only the obsidian, a black oval, 14 x 18 mm, domed and deep.

Handcrafted by Camille
Every ring is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. The cabochon forgives nothing: with no facet to distract the eye, the curve has to be perfectly even across its entire surface, one flat spot, one dull patch, and the stone is set aside. On a large format like this one, the selection is even stricter.
