Description

The black obsidian teardrop pendant, a shape that follows the stone’s most natural gesture, narrow at the top, full at the bottom, like a suspended tear. It’s the oldest cut for a stone pendant, the one that removes the least material and demands the most precision in proportion. Handmade with natural stones, it’s the one that hangs straight, never twisting on itself.

The teardrop is one of the oldest shapes in lapidary work: a point drawn in on one side, a full curve on the other, all in a single continuous line. Unlike a free-form stone, whose silhouette depends entirely on the chance of the rock, the teardrop demands a precise proportion, the balance between the width of the base and the fineness of the tip determines whether the pendant hangs straight or tilts once worn.

On black obsidian, this cut brings out what the stone does best: catching light across a curved, continuous surface, with no angle to break it. The polish runs in a single sweep across the whole teardrop, from the narrow tip to the rounded base, giving a uniform sheen with no dull patches.

Obsidian is a volcanic glass, born of lava cooled too fast to crystallise. In crystal healing, it’s associated with the root chakra and grounding, said to block outside tension and bring you back to the concrete. The teardrop shape, falling straight down, is traditionally read as reinforcing that direction: everything that rises toward the pendant flows back down, channelled, toward the ground.

Camille, founder of Bijoux Obsidienne, shaping a black obsidian teardrop pendant in her workshop in France

Handcrafted by Camille

Every pendant is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. The teardrop demands a symmetry that a free-form stone doesn’t require: I check that the tip stays perfectly centred above the base, otherwise the pendant tilts slightly once suspended, a tiny detail to the eye, but one you feel the moment you put it on.

It’s the shape I recommend to those who want a worked stone without going as far as figurative carving, something between raw and motif. Discover the story of the workshop, or my whole collection of obsidian pendants.

“A teardrop that tilts isn’t a teardrop anymore. I redo the cut until it hangs straight, every time.”, Camille

Care: a soft cloth is all it takes; avoid salt, knocks and prolonged water, and take it off before showering or exercising. All my tips are in the cleaning guide.

Here are the correspondences linked to black obsidian in crystal healing - they belong to traditions and beliefs, to be taken as such.

A Direction

The teardrop points downward - a shape that naturally suggests descent, grounding, a return to earth.

Root Chakra

Muladhara - the chakra of grounding, for which black obsidian is the reference stone.

For some, the vertical shape reinforces this downward reading.

The Suspended Drop

An almost universal shape in stone jewellery, chosen since antiquity for the way it naturally hangs straight.

Continuous Protection

With no angle or break, the surface of the teardrop is traditionally associated with a protection that envelops rather than blocks.

Reminder: these correspondences belong to crystal healing, a well-being approach based on traditions and beliefs. They do not constitute a medical claim and never replace the advice of a healthcare professional.

Caring for your obsidian

To keep your piece looking its best, a soft cloth is usually all you need. Avoid salt, harsh products and knocks, and take it off before showering, swimming or exercising.

In crystal healing, many people also like to cleanse and charge their stone from time to time, with smoke, under moonlight, or on a quartz cluster.

Handmade jewellery, made in France

Every piece is handcrafted in my workshop from natural stones chosen one by one. No mass production: small batches, and plenty of one-of-a-kind pieces.
