Rainbow obsidian owes its name to a precise optical phenomenon: tiny gas inclusions, trapped in the stone as it cooled, create a light interference that produces coloured reflections, pink, green, gold, sometimes bluish, when the stone is cut thin and angled just right. It isn’t an applied tint; it’s a natural optical effect, unique to each stone.
Careful not to confuse it with rainbow obsidian’s eye-effect cousin, which shows a pinpoint, star-like blue-silver sheen, this stone stands out for its multiple colour spectrum and a more diffuse, almost oily effect across the surface. Both varieties are rare and require a precise cut to reveal their effect.
In crystal healing, rainbow obsidian keeps the protection and grounding properties common to all black obsidians, but adds a dimension of lightness and joy tied to its hidden colours. It’s often described as the variety that helps you find lightness again after a hard time, proof, in the stone itself, that light can hide at the heart of what looks dark.

Every necklace is assembled by hand in my workshop, in France. Rainbow obsidian is one of the most delicate stones to work: the coloured effect only appears at a precise cutting angle, and I have to orient each stone so the reflection stays visible once mounted as a pendant, not just on the workbench.
