Rainbow Obsidian Jewellery and Its Blue Sheen

What is rainbow obsidian?

Rainbow obsidian is a variety of black obsidian, the volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools. What sets it apart: turn it towards the light and it reveals blue, silver or multicoloured sheen that traces a halo, an "eye" across the surface of the stone.

Every stone is unique: the eye sits somewhere different each time, with its own intensity. That's what makes this variety so sought after, no two pieces of rainbow obsidian catch the light quite the same way. Where does the blue sheen come from?

The rainbow effect isn't a dye or a coating, it's a natural optical phenomenon. As the lava cooled, microscopic inclusions (usually magnetite nanoparticles) froze into fine layers within the glass.

When light hits those layers it is diffracted, throwing back blue or iridescent reflections, much like the surface of a soap bubble. Shift the angle and the eye appears, travels, changes shade. For how this stone forms in the first place, see my article on how obsidian is formed.

Why is it called rainbow obsidian?

The name comes straight from how it looks: the sheen fans out across the stone in bands of blue, violet, green and gold, like a rainbow caught in black glass. You'll also see it sold as rainbow sheen obsidian, and when the sheen tightens into a single blue halo, some sellers call it celestial eye obsidian, same stone, same optical effect, different marketing name.

Beyond the look, that name has fed its reputation as a stone of vision and introspection in crystal healing traditions: an eye turned inwards, if you like.

The properties of rainbow obsidian

In crystal healing tradition, rainbow obsidian is described as one of the most spiritually potent obsidians. It's credited with the protective, grounding qualities of the whole obsidian family, plus an extra dimension turned towards clarity and inner vision.

It's generally associated with:

• protection from the "evil eye": symbolically, its eye is seen as a shield that sends negative energy back;
• introspection and mental clarity: it's called a "mirror stone", said to help you see what's usually hidden;
• emotional release: it's said to support awareness and moving past old blocks;
• grounding: like every obsidian, it helps keep your feet on the ground;
• energetic protection day to day, in heavy environments.

Chakras and energy

Rainbow obsidian is traditionally linked to:

• the root chakra (Muladhara), through its obsidian nature, grounding and safety;
• the third eye chakra (Ajna), through its blue eye, intuition, lucidity, inner vision;
• sometimes the throat chakra, associated with speaking truthfully.

That bridge between earth (root) and intuition (third eye) is why it has a reputation as a stone for inner work: staying grounded while looking further ahead.

Associated star signs

In crystal healing, rainbow obsidian is traditionally associated with several signs:

• Scorpio: for its intensity and its pull towards introspection;
• Sagittarius: for its search for meaning and truth;
• Capricorn and Aquarius: for their level-headedness and need for clarity.

As always, these correspondences are a guide, not a rule: the stone you're spontaneously drawn to is usually the right one.

How to wear rainbow obsidian

Rainbow obsidian is worn day to day like any black obsidian. Since the sheen is the whole point, you want to keep it visible, where the light can find the eye:

• as a bracelet: the movement of your wrist brings the sheen out through the day;
• as a pendant or necklace: near the heart or the throat, in line with its chakras;
• as a ring: to keep it in view, like a small talisman of clarity.

Tradition has you wear the stone on your left wrist to receive its energy, on the right to shield outwards. What matters most is your intention and how it feels.

Care and cleansing
