Peacock Obsidian and the Blue Pearl

Lavender, green, and violet ripples that seem to float beneath the surface, like the sheen on a peacock feather. Peacock obsidian and its cousin blue pearl obsidian are among the most delicate stones in the family, and among the most poorly explained. Here's what these two names actually mean, and why you should never mistake them for fake blue obsidian.

What is peacock obsidian?

Peacock obsidian, also called peacock velvet obsidian, obsidiana pavo real in Spanish, is a variety of black obsidian that reveals, once polished and angled toward the light, lavender, green, and violet ripples.

What defines it isn't so much the palette as the visual texture. Where rainbow obsidian shows crisp bands and fire obsidian shows metallic patches, peacock obsidian gives soft, diffuse gradients with no sharp edges. Hence the name: it looks like velvet, or the down of a peacock feather.

Blue pearl obsidian refers to the same family of effect, but with a cooler, more subdued silvery-blue tone. Both names come from Mexican quarries. See where they sit among the others in my guide to obsidian varieties.

Two names, one effect

Worth saying upfront, since it rarely gets spelled out: peacock obsidian and blue pearl obsidian are not distinct mineralogical species. They're trade names, born in Mexican quarries and workshops to describe particular colored expressions of one single phenomenon.

That phenomenon is the same one that produces rainbow obsidian: light diffracting through thin layers of magnetite nanoparticles trapped in the glass. Depending on the thickness and regularity of those layers, you get:

A single flow can produce several of these expressions, and a single stone can show a lavender velvet sheen on one side and sharper bands on the other. The boundaries are commercial, not geological.

Bottom line, don't pay a premium for the name. What gives a sheen stone its value is the intensity and regularity of its effect, the quality of the polish, and the beauty of its ripple pattern, not the label stuck on it.

Where the velvety effect comes from

The optical mechanism is the same as in rainbow obsidian: light reflects off both the top and bottom of very thin magnetite layers, and the two waves recombine, canceling out some colors and amplifying others.

What changes here is the geometry of those layers. In peacock obsidian, they're a bit thicker, less regular, and above all strongly rippled, folded by the movement of the lava before it froze solid.

The direct result: instead of throwing back one sharp color across a flat surface, the stone throws back a multitude of slightly shifted hues that blend into one another. The eye reads a soft gradient rather than a crisp band. That's exactly what produces the velvet impression.

This is the hardest one to photograph of all. The colors are so soft that a camera almost always flattens them. In person, you see a kind of colored haze that moves as you turn the stone, and no photo does it justice.

Blue pearl is not blue obsidian

This point deserves its own warning, because the mix-up can get expensive.

Careful, a blue pearl stone is a black, opaque obsidian that throws back a silvery-blue veil on the surface at certain angles. The blue is a reflection.

A translucent "blue obsidian" that shows a solid blue color from every angle, colored throughout the material, is almost always manufactured glass. The blue there is a dye, not a reflection.

The test is simple and decisive: lay the stone flat on a table, under ordinary light.

  • If it looks black, and you have to tilt it to make the blue appear, it's a genuine blue pearl stone;
  • If it stays blue at every angle, and especially if light passes through it while coloring it, it's glass.

Mexico, land of the sheen varieties

These varieties come mainly from Mexico, whose volcanic deposits have long supplied the global obsidian trade. The western and central regions of the country produce most of the effect stones.

That's no coincidence: obsidian has a history there spanning thousands of years. Mesoamerican civilizations already worked it intensively into blades, points, and mirrors, a heritage I cover in the complete obsidian guide.

The craft of working sheen stones grew out of that ancient skill. The evocative names, pavo real, perla azul, arcoíris, were born in those workshops, and later spread, often loosely translated, into the international trade.

The meaning attributed to peacock obsidian

As with other recently named varieties, let's say it plainly: there's no ancient tradition specific to peacock obsidian. The current correspondences were formulated by analogy with its palette and softness.

It's generally credited with:

  • calm: its dominant reputation, tied to the softness of its colors, often described as the least abrasive of all obsidians;
  • sensitivity and receptiveness, by analogy with its lavender tones;
  • harmony, from the way its hues blend into one another;
  • protection and grounding, qualities shared by all obsidians.

How to choose and wear it

Peacock obsidian shares the same constraint as every sheen stone: it needs directional light. Under diffuse overhead lighting, the stone simply looks black.

  • Favor curved surfaces, a sphere or a domed cabochon multiplies the angles, and so the chances of catching the effect. A flat slab only shows it from one specific orientation;
  • As a bracelet, the movement of your wrist brings the sheen to life throughout the day, it's the best format;
  • Judge the stone by turning it, never from a still photo. Ask your seller for a video;
  • Look for consistency, a fine piece keeps its effect across its whole surface, not just in one spot.

Care and cleansing

Like every stone with an optical effect, peacock obsidian depends on the state of its polish: a dulled surface scatters light and blurs the effect. An already-subtle sheen fades quickly once the stone gets scratched.

  • Cleaning, a soft, dry cloth only. A microfiber lens cloth works very well;
  • Cleansing, smudging is preferable, or a brief rinse under clear water followed by immediate drying. Avoid salt, which micro-scratches the surface;
  • Recharging, moonlight, without prolonged sun exposure;
  • Storage, in its own pouch, away from harder stones.
