Description

The mahogany obsidian necklace, the only obsidian to carry the colour of wood, a deep brownish-red, marbled with dark flecks, very different from the familiar black of this stone. Strung in a full strand, it becomes a warm, earthy necklace, as rare to find as it is to wear. Handcrafted with natural stones, it is the one you choose when you want to step away from black without leaving obsidian behind.

Mahogany obsidian, also known by that name in all languages, owes its colour to iron oxide inclusions present in the magma as it cooled. The result is a marbled stone, somewhere between deep brown and dark red, with areas of varying density depending on the iron concentration, every stone shows a different pattern, like a grain of precious wood.

Strung as a bead necklace rather than a single pendant, this particular colour comes fully into its own: the stone unfolds its nuances along the entire length of the piece, a natural gradient of brown and red that shifts in the light. It is a necklace that warms the complexion and stands visibly apart from the deep black of classic obsidian.

In crystal healing, mahogany obsidian keeps the protection and grounding properties common to all obsidians, but is traditionally credited with an extra dimension linked to vitality and physical energy, its warm tone, close to earth and blood, is often associated with a renewal of energy rather than simple recentring.

Camille, founder of Bijoux Obsidienne, stringing a mahogany obsidian necklace in her workshop in France

Handcrafted by Camille

Every necklace is strung by hand in my workshop, in France. Mahogany obsidian is harder to source than plain black, I select beads so that the veining stays visible and consistent from one bead to the next, with no jarring break in the colour gradient.

It was the one missing link between my mahogany bracelet and my necklace range: this stone deserved its own full-strand format, so its colours could truly unfold. See also the mahogany obsidian bracelet, for a matching set, or the story of the workshop.

“Mahogany is obsidian that took the colour of the earth rather than the night. I love offering it to those who want the same stone, a different face.”, Camille

Care: a soft cloth is all it takes; avoid salt, knocks and prolonged water, and take it off before showering or exercising. To choose your length, check the jewellery size guide, and all my care tips are in the cleaning guide.

Here are the correspondences linked to mahogany obsidian in crystal healing — they belong to traditions and beliefs, to be taken as such.

The Colour of Iron

Iron oxide inclusions give this obsidian its unique brownish-red hue, absent from all other varieties.

Vitality

A tone close to earth and blood — traditionally associated with physical energy rather than simple mental recentring.

Root Chakra

Muladhara — the grounding chakra, associated with all obsidians.

The earthy tone of mahogany reinforces this sense of rootedness.

Unique to Every Bead

Every bead’s veining is different — no two mahogany necklaces share exactly the same pattern.

Caring for your obsidian

To keep your piece looking its best, a soft cloth is usually all you need. Avoid salt, harsh products and knocks, and take it off before the shower, the beach, the pool or the gym.

In crystal healing, many people also like to cleanse and charge their stone from time to time, with smoke, under moonlight, or on a quartz cluster.
