Obsidian for Men: Bracelets, Rings & Meaning
Black, understated and thoroughly masculine, obsidian is one of the stones men choose most. Here is why it suits them so well, which piece to choose, and how to wear it day to day.

In this article
Stone jewellery is still too often imagined as something only women wear. And yet, since I opened my workshop in 2024, a growing share of my customers have been men, and obsidian is, by some distance, the stone they reach for first.
No surprise there: with its deep black and its understated look, obsidian, that volcanic glass, has everything a masculine piece needs. Discreet, solid, no frills. Let's look at why it suits them so well.
Why obsidian appeals to men
The appeal is both aesthetic and symbolic:
- A timeless colour. Black goes with everything, never dates, and fits any outfit, from a suit to jeans.
- An understated, masculine look. No flashy colour: obsidian gets noticed for its depth, not its sparkle.
- A strong symbol. A stone of protection and grounding, it speaks of solidity, self-possession and quiet strength, values that resonate with many men.
- A stone with character. Raw or polished, it has something mineral and authentic about it, a long way from showy jewellery.
To understand the stone itself, its origins and its properties, see my complete guide to obsidian.
The properties they look for
In crystal healing, men turn to obsidian for reasons that are often very practical. Tradition credits it with:
- Protection: said to act as a shield against negative energies and outside stress.
- Grounding: a stone that helps you feel steady and present, feet on the ground, valuable in a busy life.
- Composure under pressure: it is associated with handling emotions and keeping a cool head.
- Confidence: by quietening the mind, it is said to help you move forward with assurance.
I explore all of that in detail in my article on protection and grounding.
Which obsidian piece to choose?
The bracelet remains the piece men wear most: easy to live with, it slips onto the wrist without a thought. The ring appeals to those who want a stronger presence. To find your bearings by style:

| What he's after | The ideal piece |
|---|---|
| Something discreet for every day | Black obsidian bracelet |
| A bolder presence | Mahogany obsidian bracelet |
| Protection & courage | Tiger eye & obsidian bracelet |
| Harmony & balance (feng shui) | Feng shui bracelet |
| Maximum protection | Triple protection bracelet |
| A piece that gets noticed | Men's obsidian ring |
You will find them all in my bracelets and my rings, and do not overlook my obsidian pendants and necklaces, just as understated.
How to wear it
A few simple pointers for an elegant result:
- Go for larger beads. The 8, 10 or 12 mm sizes give a bracelet more presence, and a more masculine look than fine beads.
- Keep it understated. One well-chosen bracelet is enough; obsidian does not need stacking.
- Pair it with the right materials. It works beautifully with leather, wood, steel or other dark stones such as tiger eye.
- Wear it every day. It is a hard-wearing stone, made to come with you.
On sizing: a man's wrist usually measures between 17 and 20 cm (roughly 6¾ to 8 inches). If in doubt, my jewellery size guide walks you through measuring in two minutes.
"A lot of men tell me they never imagined wearing a stone… and that once it is on their wrist, they never take it off. It is often the first piece of jewellery they allow themselves."
Giving obsidian to a man
It makes a particularly well-judged gift. Men rarely buy themselves jewellery: an obsidian bracelet becomes a gesture that means something, well beyond the object itself.

Its symbolism of protection makes it a strong present for a partner, a father, a brother or a friend: a quiet way of saying "I'm looking out for you". Ideal for a birthday, Father's Day, Christmas or Valentine's Day.
Gift tip: if you are unsure about the size, a bracelet on elastic thread adapts more easily. And if you are hesitating, write to me, I am happy to advise.
Care
Nothing demanding: like any obsidian, cleanse it with smoke or under a trickle of clear water, and recharge it in moonlight. All the steps are detailed in my cleansing guide.
A quick reminder: crystal healing is a complementary wellbeing practice. The properties mentioned here come from tradition and belief; they are in no way a substitute for medical advice or treatment.
