Obsidian for men: bracelets, rings & meaning
Black, understated and deeply masculine, obsidian is one of men's favourite stones. Here's why it suits them so well, which piece to choose, and how to wear it day to day.

Stone jewellery is still too often imagined as a women's thing. Yet since I opened my studio in 2024, a growing share of my customers have been men, and obsidian is, by some distance, the stone they pick first.
No surprise there: with its deep black and understated look, obsidian, a volcanic glass, has everything a men's piece needs. Discreet, solid, no frills. Let's look at why it fits so well.
Why obsidian appeals to men
The appeal is part aesthetic, part symbolic:
- A timeless colour. Black goes with everything, never dates, and works with any outfit, from a suit to jeans.
- An understated, masculine look. No showy colour: obsidian gets noticed for its depth, not its sparkle.
- Strong symbolism. A stone of protection and grounding, it evokes solidity, self-possession and quiet strength, values that speak to a lot of men.
- A stone with character. Raw or polished, there's something mineral and honest about it, a long way from showy jewellery.

The properties they look for
In crystal healing, men turn to obsidian for reasons that are often very concrete. Tradition credits it with:
- Protection: said to act as a shield against negative energy and outside stress.
- Grounding: a stone said to help you feel steady, present, feet on the ground, valuable in a full life.
- Calm under pressure: associated with managing emotions and keeping a cool head.
- Confidence: by quieting the mind, it's said to help you move forward with assurance.

The bracelet remains the most-worn piece among men: easy to live with, it slips onto the wrist without a thought. The ring appeals to those who want a stronger presence. To narrow it down by the look you're after:

How to wear it
A few simple pointers for a sharp result:
- Go for larger beads. Sizes 8, 10 or 12 mm give a bracelet more presence, and a more masculine look than fine beads.
- Keep it simple. One well-chosen bracelet is enough; obsidian doesn't need stacking.
- Match the right materials. It sits beautifully with leather, wood, steel or other dark stones like tiger eye.
- Wear it daily. It's a sturdy stone, made to come along for the ride.

Gifting obsidian to a man
It's a particularly well-judged gift idea. Men rarely buy themselves jewellery, so an obsidian bracelet becomes a gesture with real meaning, well beyond the object itself.
Its symbolism of protection makes it a strong present for a partner, a father, a brother or a friend: a quiet way of saying "I've got your back". Ideal for a birthday, Father's Day, Christmas or Valentine's Day.
